Module Outline
The module deals with the mechanistic basis for perception and action by animals. We introduce neurons, synapses and neurotransmitters, and outline how the neurons transmit signals and process information. Sensory processing and perception are exemplified by the visual pathway, from the eye to specialised feature detectors in the cortex. Further, lectures on studying behaviour form an integral strand. A major theme to the module is understanding experimental technique and approaches allowing us to investigate and further our understanding of behaviour and its neuronal components.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate an understanding of behavioural analysis at different levels of study.
Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the nervous system: the action potential, synapses, neurotransmitters; and some simple neural circuits.
Be able to explain how neural mechanisms underlie sensory perception (vision) and control behaviours, as well as explaining the basics of simple learning mechanisms.
Have practised skills in critical reading of scientific literature, including primary research papers and be able to communicate findings and conclusions from these, as well as understanding the experimental approach to the problem under investigation.
