Masters Mediterranean Ecol Field Course (827C1)
Masters Mediterranean Ecology Field Course
Module 827C1
Module details for 2025/26.
30 credits
FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)
Module Outline
For this module, you visit an ecological site in the Mediterranean and carry out field work. The Mediterranean phylogeographic region includes a diversity of habitats that contrast markedly with those found in the UK, and contain very different flora and fauna. Experience of a variety of environments is essential for a good understanding of the ecology of biodiversity and the selection forces driving its evolution. Experience of carrying out research in novel environments is also an essential part of learning to be a field biologist or ecologist. On completion of this module, students should be able to design and carry out ecological or behavioural field research projects, using the flora or fauna of a Mediterranean field site as their study system. Students will develop research proposals, conduct field work, analyse their data, and present their findings both in written form and in the form of a research seminar.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate the ability to design and carry out ecological or behavioural field experiments, including the statistical analysis of data, at an advanced level.
Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of advanced topics in animal behaviour and ecology that enable the critical evaluation of current research in the discipline.
Plan, execute and present an independent piece of project work, demonstrating practical competencies, originality in problem solving, identification skills, team work, data analysis, and oral and written communication skills at an advanced level.
