Applied Skills in Chemistry

Module FND08

Module details for 2025/26.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 3 (sub-degree)

Module Outline

The module will support the development of practical skills within the broad area of chemistry and provide practice at numerical problem solving, data handling, graphical techniques and interpretation, so that you can study any of the life science degrees, effectively, at the end of the year. This module is based around five practical laboratory sessions and the associated skills and techniques that link to the topics covered within the Introduction to Chemistry module.

The assessment will include a short independent research project, and associated presentation, to provide you with an opportunity to practice academic and transferrable skills. In addition to this project there is also a short multiple choice quiz allowing you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate the ability to perform arithmetic and computation including ratios, fractions and percentages; as well as competency in scientific notation and SI units.

Demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical skills to chemistry problems

Demonstrate competency within a range of basic chemistry laboratory techniques
