Module Outline

This module requires students to carry out the foundations for a research project on a specialised topic in the area of their degree. It will involve a project-specific mix of training in practical skills, the consideration of ethical aspects, potential impacts and the risks to health and safety associated with the planned research, the generation of hypotheses and the production of initial data. Records of training, experiments and practical work will be recorded in a laboratory book together with a reflective commentary to form a record of the research journey for the student.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate a systematic understanding of a specialised topic in the area of their degree and the ability to critically evaluate primary literature and experimental data

Plan and execute an independent piece of project work on a specialised topic in the area of their degree, demonstrating understanding and competence in practical research techniques, problem solving and autonomy, and ability to assess risks and issues with regards to health and safety.

Show an understanding of ethical aspects and the potential impacts of research on a specialised topic

Demonstrate the ability to learn independently from experience to develop skills and understanding
