Organic Chemistry

Module FND13

Module details for 2025/26.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 3 (sub-degree)

Module Outline

The organic chemistry module gives an advanced insight into molecules that are based on carbon. The module goes slightly beyond the typical A level syllabus, focusing on three key themes in detail: Nomenclature, Isomerism and Reaction Mechanisms. This module builds upon the introductory chemistry module. A knowledge of organic chemistry at this level facilitates understanding of the way that chemical, and biological, compounds interact and will inform your future study of life sciences.

The module includes at least one practical experiment, normally an organic preparation, from which a laboratory report is produced. The laboratory sessions will build on the laboratory skills acquired in the autumn term, as well as implementing new concepts.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of an extended range of concepts in organic chemistry

Produce well-structured lab reports

Manipulate, rearrange and solve equations used in chemistry and express numerical data as defined by the experimental precision
