Core Laboratory Skills for Chemists 1

Module F1006

Module details for 2025/26.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 5

Module Outline

This laboratory aims to consolidate the synthesis, isolation, and characterisation of inorganic and organometallic compounds and theoretical calculations to support experimental evidence. The students will perform basic synthetic experiments and use various analytical characterisation techniques to strengthen their knowledge. The experiments will provide an understanding of fundamental inorganic concepts, develop understanding and experience in essential inorganic characterisation techniques and implement theoretical calculations to rationalise experimental data. Students will keep an appropriately formatted laboratory notebook to record the details of each experiment.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge for writing manuscripts intended to report and consolidate synthetic, measurement, and computational data.

Demonstrate skills to correctly interpret spectroscopic results.

Use techniques for synthesising air-sensitive compounds and using specialised computational methods for chemical reactions.

Demonstrate the application of fundamental inorganic concepts to laboratory experiments and building as well as developing critical thinking skills.

Please note that the University will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver courses and modules in accordance with the descriptions set out here. However, the University keeps its courses and modules under review with the aim of enhancing quality. Some changes may therefore be made to the form or content of courses or modules shown as part of the normal process of curriculum management.

The University reserves the right to make changes to the contents or methods of delivery of, or to discontinue, merge or combine modules, if such action is reasonably considered necessary by the University. If there are not sufficient student numbers to make a module viable, the University reserves the right to cancel such a module. If the University withdraws or discontinues a module, it will use its reasonable endeavours to provide a suitable alternative module.
