Struc Determin in Organic & Inorgan Chem (F1301)
Structure Determination in Organic and Inorganic Chemistry
Module F1301
Module details for 2025/26.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 5
Module Outline
The module covers modern and advanced methods of elucidation of the structures of organic molecules, including NMR, MS, and IR (amongst others). The major emphasis of this module is on structure determination by way of interpreting the data (generally in the form of a spectrum or spectra) that each method provides, as well as assignment strategies.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamental methods to solve the structure of an unknown molecule.
Demonstrate knowledge of the development and operation of the most relevant spectroscopic methods and instruments.
Read and analyse spectroscopic data and use it to solve unknown structures of inorganic and organic molecules.
Report data accurately and in detail in accordance with the requirements of scientific publishers.
