Module F1102

Module details for 2025/26.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 5

Module Outline

This module aims to develop the skills and understanding required for explaining scientific concepts to a range of audiences. This module has been designed to encourage chemistry undergraduates to think critically. The module begins with an exploration of the features, and types of scientific explanations which are used to effectively communicate. Students will bring these ideas together and develop knowledge and understanding of questioning, models and modelling of scientific concepts and processes to aid effective explanations. The module will give opportunities to do individual oral presentation, poster presentation, team debates, essays and scientific journal write ups. The scientific content around which students will base their research and communication for this module will include topics in green Chemistry, environmental Chemistry and climate change.

Module learning outcomes

Apply knowledge and understanding of how concepts in chemistry can be communicated to a specific audience.

Draw upon a range of sources to inform the development of effective explanations in science and chemistry.

Demonstrate ability to critically evaluate theories and concepts used in explaining chemistry to a specific audience.

Apply problem solving skills to develop explanations that challenge a specific misconception.
