Module Outline
The coastal environment includes some of the most diverse and biodiverse habitats on the planet. Many of these coastal environments, such as rocky shores, are highly dynamic, presenting particular challenges and selection pressures for the organisms inhabiting them. This module will introduce you to some of the basic fieldwork skills of coastal biology, and ecology develop your general skills in field research: experimental design, data sampling, organism identification, data analysis and report writing. The module involves a residential coastal biology field course and subsequent independent fieldwork exercises for you to learn and develop these skills.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate understanding of the biology and ecology of coastal habitats and show the ability to identify and classify common taxa found in coastal habitats.
Carry out simple statistical analysis of data collected in coastal habitats using computer software and interpret the results.
Work collaboratively in a team to select and utilise appropriate methods to answer simple research questions in coastal biology and ecology.
Demonstrate the ability to write concisely, in the standard format for a lab report.
