Principles of Medical Neuroscience
Module C1129
Module details for 2025/26.
30 credits
FHEQ Level 5
Module Outline
This module is run in conjunction with the medical school. It has three overarching themes: fundamental neuroscience and the brain; sensory inputs and motor outputs; and modulatory systems in psychiatry.
The first lectures explore the anatomical and physiological foundations of the nervous system and neurons. This includes synaptic transmission and effects of drugs on the brain.
Learning and memory and are explored, extending into dementia. Plasticity and regeneration are set against neuropathology, and psychological aspects of neurological diseases.
Finally, the neurobiology and neurochemistry of emotion and reward pathways, are explored, together with related disorders and treatments.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate understanding, at an appropriate level, of the function of the brain, how neurons communicate and how drugs influence brain function.
Demonstrate understanding of and identify the organisation and function of the sensory and motor pathways as well as the pathways responsible for learning, memory and the generation of emotion
Use and implement understanding of the points in LO1 and LO2, to be able to identify and define the biological and psychosocial bases of major psychiatric syndromes and of common neurological diseases.
Analyse and evaluate research information, and on the basis of this to generate ideas about the aetiologies and treatment of the relevant normal and abnormal conditions.
Develop problem solving skills to tackle scientific challenges.
Critically assess and integrate ideas from primary literature and develop skills to present a convincing and original argument in written form
