Module C1008

Module details for 2025/26.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 5

Module Outline

This module explores the process by which an adult organism arises from a fertilised egg. The module focuses on how information in the genome is converted into the complex programmes of cellular behaviour and differentiation that will ultimately shape the morphology of the embryo and adult organism. Students will learn core concepts of embryology and genetics, emerging from both classical and modern studies of developmental processes in animals, and the implications for human health, fertility, and disease. They will learn about key experiments involving a wide-range of methodologies, and recent advances in stem cells, cloning, organoids and assisted reproduction.

Module learning outcomes

Explain the basic mechanisms and processes of animal development in invertebrate, vertebrate and human systems, through the integration of molecular, genetic, biochemical, cellular and evolutionary concepts and data.

Critically evaluate and interpret scientific data in order to identify the key problems, findings and implications.

Evaluate the main experimental approaches and methodologies used in the field of developmental biology and be able to apply these logically to generate experimental strategies aimed at testing hypotheses within the field.

Develop structured and coherent arguments about the study of development and communicate these clearly and logically by means of written communication.
