Module Outline

The course will focus on the way neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) are used to provide evidence on pathological processes in the brain. Topics will include the basic physical principles of MRI and PET, and how are these two modalities used to provide qualitative and quantitative information on brain structure, microstructure, function, blood flow, cellular metabolism and neurochemistry, and how changes in these domains are linked to pathological mechanisms in brain diseases,including neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases, psychiatric disorders, autoimmune diseases, brain tumours and stroke.

Module learning outcomes

Accurately describe the physical principles behind the majorneuroimaging techniquesused in diagnosis and clinical research.

Accurately describe the link between pathological mechanisms in brain diseases and how they present on neuroimaging data.

Understand the concept of imaging biomarkersand critically assess the imaging biomarkers for disease progression based on quantitative and qualitative criteria.

Articulate technical as well as conceptual/ethical issues in a short essay formatthat is accessible to a broad audience.
