Principles and Practices in Drug Discove (F1605)
Principles and Practices in Drug Discovery and Delivery
Module F1605
Module details for 2025/26.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)
Module Outline
The cost of bringing a new drug to market has risen past £1bn over the last few years. To try to bring this cost down, drug discovery is constantly evolving to reduce the time and cost required to bring a drug to market. In this module you will discover the strategies being employed to generate new compounds and new classes of compounds of medical interest
more cheaply and quickly. The module also highlights how these drugs can be delivered to the patient to improve their efficacy and reduce unwanted side effects, which greatly improves patient outcomes without the need to undergo new clinical trials.
Module learning outcomes
Critically analyse the structure of unseen drug type molecules and propose their rationale for their design and function
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the principles underpinning drug discovery and delivery
Use conceptual understanding of the principles macromolecule / drug assemblies to rationalize the design of unseen structures and propose
structures to achieve specific performance targets
Summarize cutting edge literature in the context of known drug discovery/delivery principles and propose how these could be iteratively improved in future work
