Module Outline

In this module you will spend a significance amount of time using in-silico methods or within a research lab, to designing and carry out a series of experiments to answer a specific medicinal chemistry question. Through this work, you will gain hands on experience of the skills required to be a professional drug discovery chemist. These may include docking studies, in silico screening or the synthesis, purification and analysis and new molecules, each with the potential to be the starting (or end!) point for the discovery of a new therapy. You will be supported during your research both through formal and informal PI/group meetings and by targeted training (for example use of equipment and software). You will gain experience in how to draft research proposals, and present new data both as a formal scientific presentation and in an extended thesis. On completion of your project, you will have a deep understanding of the practical aspects of the drug discovery process.

Note: The stated Lab hours are indicative only (e.g. 6 hrs a day 5 days a week), and will vary from day to day and week to week depending on the experimental work being done.

Demonstrate the ability to formulate their own reasoned opinions in an advanced topic of chemistry and, where appropriate, propose and test new hypotheses

Demonstrate the professional skills required to generate new data within the context of a medicinal chemistry project and communicate these original ideas in writing

Demonstrate the professional skills required to practice chemical science and communicate original ideas verbally.

Demonstrate an understanding of working within ethical guidelines during drug discovery projects.
