Advanced Drug Discovery and Chemical Ent (F1609)
Advanced Drug Discovery and Chemical Enterprise
Module F1609
Module details for 2025/26.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)
Module Outline
This module highlights the typical route of a new drug from the initial discovery of a molecule of interest, through to a final drug on the market. You will discover the skills required to critically analyse the structure of drug molecules and the rules and concepts needed to develope new, improved medicines. The module also brings in experts from outside the university who will share their experience in chemical enterprise. Previous highlights may include seminars on the successfully transfer technology from the laboratory, funding start-ups, the importance of patents and patent law as well as the structures and aims of big pharmaceutical/chemical companies.
Module learning outcomes
Critically appraise aspects of chemical enterprise in the context of Drug Discovery and how this can bring future benefits to society and industries of all scales.
The ability to apply the key physicochemical principles underpinning drug design and understanding of primary biological processes from a chemical standpoint to solve advanced medical chemistry problems
Use of the principles of drug discovery to critically evaluate the structures of molecules to independently predict, identify and solve structural defects.
