Coastal Biology and Ecology Field Course
Module C7160
Module details for 2022/23.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 4
Module Outline
The coastal environment includes some of the most diverse and biodiverse habitats on the planet. Many of these coastal environments, such as rocky shores, are highly dynamic, presenting particular challenges and selection pressures for the organisms inhabiting them. This module will introduce you to some of the basic fieldwork skills of coastal biology, and ecology develop your general skills in field research: experimental design, data sampling, organism identification, data analysis and report writing. The module involves a residential coastal biology field course and subsequent independent fieldwork exercises for you to learn and develop these skills.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate the ability to identify and classify common taxa found in the marine environment
Carry out simple statistical analysis of marine biology data using computer software and interpret the results
Independently select and utilise appropriate methods to answer simple research questions in marine biology
