Module Outline

This module will be centred on the study of the processes that guide the transformation of the fertilised egg into the complex organism. In particular, students will be presented with the view that genes acting as information processors guide the coordinated behaviour of cells so as to determine the features of the organism. Advances in Molecular and Cellular Biology, added to the more recent progress in live microscopy and genomics, have led to a remarkable progress in the understanding of Developmental Biology. The students will be exposed to these advances and their impact on the understanding of development throughout the module. The module will focus on how body plans and organs systems are laid down in different models (especially in Drosophila and various vertebrate systems) as well as on later aspects of development including organogenesis and growth. Recent discoveries in developmental biology, most notably, the manipulation of stem cells and cloning, will be used to discuss the impact of this subject on human health and disease.

Module learning outcomes

To know and critically understand the basic mechanisms and processes of animal development in invertebrate and vertebrate systems.

To be able to critically understand and explain developmental mechanisms and processes through the integration of molecular, genetic, biochemical, cellular and evolutionary concepts and data.

To know the main experimental approaches and methodologies used in the field of developmental biology and be able to use these logically in the design of experimental strategies aimed at testing hypotheses within the field.

To be able to develop structured and coherent arguments within the area of developmental biology and communicate these clearly and logically in a variety of forms including answers to short questions and essays.
