Applied Human Virology and Bacteriology

Module C7163

Module details for 2022/23.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 6

Module Outline

In the modern era, with the ease of global travel and exposure to new (and re-emerging) pathogens, the study of the transmission, epidemiology and treatment of communicable diseases has never been so important. This module provides a detailed insight into factors determining the public health importance of human viruses and bacteria. There will be a specific focus on the role of epidemiology, vaccine and drug development in the context of these diseases. The students will develop a critical approach to contemporary literature on selected diseases, enabling an evaluation of the relative significance of laboratory-based research from various fields.

Module learning outcomes

Critically assess the reasons for the appearance, reappearance and spread of infectious diseases.

Develop and apply knowledge on the importance of immunisation and antimicrobial development in the control of infectious diseases.

Show appreciation of the complexity of controlling infectious diseases and the threat they pose.

Sustain arguments on the likely impact of new scientific developments on minimising the burden from infectious diseases
