Reaction Energetics and Kinetics

Module F1094

Module details for 2022/23.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 4

Module Outline

This module will give an overview of understanding the energetic drive of phase transition and chemical reactions. The student will gain valuable insight into why the transformation is energetically favourable and what is the equilibrium point of reactions. Quantitative analysis of correlation between elementary reaction and reaction order, as well as the correlation between the activation energy and rate constant will be established. A successful student will also be able to predict the reaction direction and reaction rate.

Module learning outcomes

Explain and describe chemical physical equilibrium.

Explain the nature of heat and work in association of first law and applied on ideal gases.

Understand the concept of entropy, and free energy. Using free energy to predict the direction of change in a closed system.

Knowledge of the underlying concepts and principles of reaction kinetics
