Functional Group Chemistry (F1169)
Functional Group Chemistry
Module F1169
Module details for 2022/23.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 4
Module Outline
The aim of the module is to describe and introduce the chemistry of the carbonyl functional moiety, which is found in an extremely diverse range of molecules that are important in the chemical industry. The module examines in detail the chemistry of the carbonyl functional group, allowing the chemical behaviour of more complex molecules to be understood and predicted. The module will also study the synthesis, chemical reactivity and electronic structure of alkenes and aromatic compounds.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate an understanding of the reactivity patterns of molecules containing carbonyl groups
Develop an ability to devise synthetic methods employing enolate and enamine chemistry
Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between addition and substitution reactions of alkenes and aromatic compounds and an ability to predict the products of simple electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions
Develop the laboratory skills required to perform a range of functional group transformations
