Module Outline

The aim of this module is to explore selected areas of Main Group Chemistry and introduce the chemistry of the lathanide and actinide elements, in both cases highlighting differences with the chemistry of elements from the transition series. Topics covered include: aspects of bonding in the p-block elements; NMR spectroscopy of the p-block elements; main group cluster species; introduction to lanthanides and their chemistry; coordination chemistry and applications of lanthanide complexes; actinide chemistry.

Module learning outcomes

Achieve a comprehensive knowledge of the major concepts, principles and theories of p- and f-block elements and the ability to critically solve problems related to them

Demonstrate detailed knowledge of different bonding types encountered in the p-block elements and explain and predict the shapes of main group clusters of a given formula

Apply their understanding of NMR spectroscopy to predict the spectra of unknown main group compounds and explicate its usefulness in f-block chemistry

A systematic understanding of electronic, magnetic, spectroscopic and catalytic properties of f-block compounds
