Module Outline
The aim of this module is to provide a firm physical foundation for future applications of the more mathematical aspects of chemistry. It will introduce one of the most important and widely applicable concepts in physical science - symmetry. It will extend qualitative notions of symmetry in everyday life to quantitative applications at a molecular level. The techniques learnt in this module will serve as a very strong foundation for a deeper understanding of many future quantitative concepts in all branches of chemistry.
Module learning outcomes
Identify symmetry elements and operations in any given molecule
Assign molecular point groups and interpret the information in character tables
Perform basic matrix algebra, and correlate symmetry operations with matrix algebra

Apply principles of symmetry to either previously seen or unseen examples both quantitatively and qualitatively
