Module Outline
Experience of a variety of environments is essential for a good understanding of ecology, biodiversity and the selective forces driving evolution. Carrying out research in novel environments is also an essential part of learning to be a researcher, as well as being one of the most enjoyable and rewarding ways of learning about ecology. The Mediterranean phylogeographic region contain very different and interesting flora and fauna, giving students an opportunity to work on a mini-research project studying some aspect of animal behaviour or ecology. Students will develop research plans, conduct field work, analyse their data, and present their findings both in a written report and in a research seminar.
Pre-Requisite
If this module is opened up to Ecology students, the pre-requisite for them would be F8509 Quantitative and Analytical Skills (instead of Research Methods for Biology).
Module learning outcomes
Design and carry out ecological or behavioural field experiments.
Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the application and limitations of different methods for data collection and/or analysis of field biology data.
Synthesise accurately and succinctly the primary scientific literature, and effectively communicate results and conclusions in written and oral form.
Apply employability skills in field data collection, team working, data processing and report writing with scientific rigour.
