Module Outline
The module aims to describe the origins and state of the art of supramolecular chemistry. The founding concepts of supramolecular interactions will be explored and contrasted with those properties of typical covalent bonds. Re-enforced with selected examples from the recent literature the student will be equipped to understand the design principles behind the complex and expanding array of supramolecular switches, machines and materials have become commonplace in recent times.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate understanding of the major classes of supramolecular interactions e.g. hydrogen bonding, stacking, metal-ligand interactions.
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the reversible nature of supramolecular interactions and how this is harnessed to produce functioning nano-machines as well as supramolecular polymeric and inorganic materials.
Evaluate and critique, in chemical terms, the major synthetic strategies used to synthesize supramolecular systems.
Create and design supramolecular systems using rational chemical transformations to achieve pre-determined functionalities.
