Neutral Atom Chip Technology

Module 991F3Q

Module details for 2025/26.

5 credits

FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)

Module Outline

This module will cover the theory and experimental design of atom chips. In particular
• Ioffe-Pritchard trapping of neutral atoms.
• Basics of Bose-Einstein condensation.
• Matter wave interferometry in atom chips.
Some familiarity with Wolfram Mathematica is assumed.

Module learning outcomes

Design a basic planar magnetic trap for ultra-cold neutral atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates.

Apply the adiabatic RF technique to coherent matter-wave interferometry applications in an atom chip.
