On this module, you’ll examine the role of the performer in the modern recording studio.
Working collaboratively with studio recordists, you’ll:
- learn about performing with different microphone types and recording strategies
- learn within the contexts of both analogue and digital studios
- explore different historical styles of performance and recording across a range of genres
- engage in hands-on exploration of practical approaches to multi-track recording.
You’ll learn studio performance techniques from first take to post-production. This includes appropriate workflow and basic recording, mixing, and mastering techniques to finalise tracks for distribution. You’ll perform and record a musical piece as part of the assessment.

- Demonstrate a working knowledge of performance practice in a modern recording studio
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the complete studio signal chain
- Describe the different microphone types and demonstrate a working knowledge of microphone recording techniques
- Summarise the key changes in the way performers have worked in the recording studio across advances in analogue and digital technology
