Molecular Biology (C7004)
Molecular Biology
Module C7004
Module details for 2022/23.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 4
Module Outline
Despite the diversity of life, the molecular mechanisms that ensure the flow of genetic information from one generation to the next, and the expression of genes from DNA to protein via an RNA intermediate, are remarkably conserved. This module aims to teach fundamental mechanisms such as DNA replication, transcription and translation. You will also learn about how the structures of nucleic acids and proteins relate to their functions. Finally you will find out how the tools of molecular biology such as cloning and PCR allow us to manipulate and understand genes and proteins.
Module learning outcomes
Summarise basic aspects of Nucleic acid structure and how genes are expressed
Outline basic principles of how gene expression is regulated
Summarise the basic principles of protein structure and function and summarise key methodology used in genetic engineering
Explain the basis of selected laboratory methods used to study cells and biomolecules and demonstrate an ability to process and analyse experimental data

Please note that the University will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver courses and modules in accordance with the descriptions set out here. However, the University keeps its courses and modules under review with the aim of enhancing quality. Some changes may therefore be made to the form or content of courses or modules shown as part of the normal process of curriculum management.
The University reserves the right to make changes to the contents or methods of delivery of, or to discontinue, merge or combine modules, if such action is reasonably considered necessary by the University. If there are not sufficient student numbers to make a module viable, the University reserves the right to cancel such a module. If the University withdraws or discontinues a module, it will use its reasonable endeavours to provide a suitable alternative module.
