This course is set at Level 6 in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.

Course learning outcomes

Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the processes and mechanisms of life, from molecules to cells and organisms that is informed by current genetic research.

Demonstrate detailed knowledge of (i) the molecular basis of genetics and (ii) gene expression (including the structure, arrangement, expression, and regulation of genes) through provision of specific examples and application of relevant experimental methods.

Recognise the principles that determine the 3-D structure of biological macromolecules and apply these principles to explain how structure enables function.

Show an understanding of how prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are suited to their biological functions and how their properties can be investigated.

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the techniques of modern genetics and genomics, and the insights that they can bring to evolution, bioscience, medicine and disease.

Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary research and concepts in genetics.

Demonstrate ability to access and evaluate genetic information from a variety of sources, including experimental data and the primary literature.

Demonstrate competencies in a range of practical genetic techniques and work safely in a laboratory environment; recording data accurately, numeracy, manipulation of experimental data (including statistical analysis if appropriate) and interpret the results.

Have practical understanding of how established genetic techniques are used to create and interpret knowledge in the discipline.

Demonstrate ability to plan, execute and present an independent piece of project work, involving data collection or evaluation of the primary scientific literature, within a supported framework.

Show a conceptual understanding of ethical issues and the impact on society of advances in genetics.

Demonstrate an ability to marshal evidence in support of arguments, as well as critically evaluate arguments.

Show high level skills in oral and written presentation of genetic topics, citation and referencing of sources.

Demonstrate ability to work effectively in teams, and have demonstrated skills in identifying and working cooperatively towards targets.

Have developed skills to study and work effectively, updated knowledge of genetics, and work towards personal, academic and career development goals.

Demonstrate ability to act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional level.
