Modern Methods in Genetics

Module C7151

Module details for 2022/23.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 5

Module Outline

The aim of the module is to familiarise students with the rapidly expanding use of modern molecular genetic techniques in medicine, the bioetechnology industry and basic science.

The module will comprise a lecture and seminar-based component in parallel with laboratory sessions. The laboratory work will cover fundamental aspects of Molecular Genetics which form the basis of many modern gentic experiments, giving the students hands-on experience of a number of molecular genetic techniques. The lectures and seminars will consist of 4 sections: Defining Gene Function, Investigating Gene Function, Engineering New Traits, and Diagnostics. These sections will cover different methods in modern genetics and demonstrate how they are being used to investigate or manipulate biological processes.

Module learning outcomes

Display knowledge and critical understanding of the principles of modern methods in genetics, and of the way in which those principles have developed.

Display ability to apply underlying concepts and principles of modern methods in genetics outside the context in which they were first studied.

Be familiar with a range of established molecular genetics techniques and undertake critical analysis of information, and to propose solutions to problems arising from that analysis

Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms
