This course is set at Level 7 (Masters) in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.

Course Aims

This programme aims to:
1. provide students with a comprehensive base of chemical knowledge and practical skills and an awareness of the current problems at the forefront of chemical research
2. develop in students the critical ability to apply their chemical knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in chemical research
3. provide students with a range of transferable skills of value in a variety of careers
4. provide experience of chemistry and chemical applications in an industrial setting
5. develop in students an enthusiasm for chemistry and an appreciation of its economic and environmental importance
6. Satisfy the academic requirements for the Chartered Chemist (CChem) designation of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)

Course learning outcomes

Have achieved a comprehensive knowledge of the major concepts, principles and theories of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry in terms of structural, analytical and synthetic methodology and in terms of the properties of compounds.

Have a critical awareness of the major issues at the frontiers of chemical research

Demonstrate a practical understanding of and ability to use and evaluate a diverse range of information and research resources, including internet-based resources

Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the major aspects of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry; and where appropriate medicinal chemistry

Be able to critically analyse and solve problems related to their expertise in chemistry

Be able to critically evaluate complex scientific chemical data and use relevant computational methods in research

Present scientific material both orally and in writing in a scholarly manner

Have the ability to use laboratory equipment and standard procedures safely

Be able to appreciate the importance of carrying out careful and precise measurements to generate reliable data

Be able to prepare and separate compounds and analyse substances

Be able to prepare scientific reports, make oral presentations and use the scientific literature effectively, demonstrating scholarship in their research
