Anthropological Research Methods (850L6)

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll study key methods, theories and ethical issues in ethnographic research used in anthropology and the social sciences.

You’ll explore research methods, such as:

  • interviews
  • participant observation
  • ethnography
  • visual and digital methodology.

You’ll cover issues with methodology in research design and conduct, and how this connects to issues of epistemology and ethics. You’ll build practical research skills, including participatory and action research. You’ll also learn how to analyse and write up qualitative data, while studying broader debates about:

  • politics
  • positionality
  • representation in ethnographic research and writing.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 22 hours of contact time and about 128 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
