Historical Consultancy (V1490)

15 credits, Level 5

Autumn teaching

On this module, you’ll pair academic history with professional practice to prepare for today’s employment landscape.

You’ll learn how to apply historical knowledge and insights in real-world settings. You’ll tackle real heritage or policy challenges set by external organisations. You’ll work in a team to develop and pitch ideas, and find solutions. Through this, you’ll build skills in:

  • problem-solving
  • collaboration
  • project management
  • time-management.

You’ll combine this hands-on consultancy experience with critical examination. You’ll analyse the modern knowledge economy and the changing employment outlook for History graduates. You’ll also explore how your History degree translates into transferable skills valued across different sectors. You’ll learn how to articulate your disciplinary expertise and demonstrate the commercial and social value of History to potential employers.

The module will give you the skills, practical knowledge and confidence for a placement year, if you choose to take one. It will also expand your opportunities after graduation.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We鈥檒l make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
