American Studies Dissertation and Research Communication (T7070)
45 credits, Level 6
Autumn and spring teaching
The module runs across both semesters of the final year and is made up of two parts.
On the first part, you’ll work on an American Studies project of your choosing. Through this, you’ll:
- produce a thoughtful and original piece of writing
- develop and demonstrate advanced skills of independent working
- express academic interests in an intellectually disciplined and creative way.
You’ll benefit from the guidance of a supervisor and develop the self-discipline, time-management and organisation needed for a dissertation. You’ll orally present your topic to your peers in the development process. You’ll also build research and writing skills through reading short essays, texts and provocations on American literature, history and politics. The question of what writing an American Studies dissertation means today will run throughout.
On the second part of the module, you’ll focus on research communication and public engagement in collaborative and individual modes. You’ll examine and evaluate examples of research communication. You’ll then propose, prototype and (depending on the project) execute your own research communication projects, based on your dissertation.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We鈥檒l make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
