American Studies in Practice (T7071)

15 credits, Level 6

Spring teaching

On this module, you’ll explore the historical and contemporary connections between Sussex and the United States. You’ll focus on local sites and institutions that reflect this transatlantic relationship.

You’ll come to understand the real-world relevance and applications of the knowledge and skills you’ve gained. You’ll actively engage with key ideas around audience, curation, heritage and policy. Through this, you’ll develop an independent project on local or transnational stories. You’ll also produce a public-facing output to connect with external cultural and community partners.

In the process, you’ll gain experience of working with external partners and deepen your understanding of transnational history, public engagement and community collaboration.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We鈥檒l make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
