Spell check tool

  • Choose language from drop-down. Click tool to use.

Find and replace tool

  • Click tool and enter find and replace terms

Clean up messy code tool. May be useful if you have been reorganising the page and suspect that some elements are out of alignment. Particularly useful if pasting in from heavily-formatted Word documents.

  • Click tool to use.

Remove formatting tool. One better than clean up code. This removes all code, giving you the chance to start the page over again.

  • To use, highlight text and click on tool

Copy tool

  • To use, highlight text and click on tool

Paste tool

  • To use, position cursor on page and click on tool

Paste as plain text tool. Very useful if pasting the content of a heavily formatted Word document into the Web Content Editor. It allows you to redo the page, using a clean html structure - e.g. paragraphs, headings, lists.

  • To use, click on tool and paste your content into the editor

Gridlines tool. Shows gridlines on the page - e.g. in a table.

  • Click tool to use. Click again to cancel.

Insert special character tool

  • Click tool and choose what you need from the grid

Text format tool. Please note: main page headings should be h2, with h3 and (when necessary) h4 as sub-headings.

  • To use, highlight text, click on tool and choose from drop-down list

N.B. You can use this tool to check that your page has a good, solid html foundation. Place the cursor anywhere on the page and the drop-down box will display the format for that text.

Full screen tool. Enlarges the editor window.

  • Click tool to use. Click again to undo

HTML view tool. Shows the HTML code.

Toolbar tool. Reveals an advanced level of editor tools.

  • Click tool to use. Click again to close

Anchor tool. Use this tool to place an 'anchor' on your page. An anchor allows you to link to a specific location on your page.

  • To create an anchor, click on the anchor tool and give your anchor a name (e.g. references)
  • To link to your anchor, create a link using #nameofyouranchor as your link text (e.g. #references).

The bold tool

  • To use, highlight text and click on tool

The italic tool

  • To use, highlight text and click on tool

The strikethrough tool

  • To use, highlight text and click on tool

The subscript tool

  • To use, highlight text and click on tool

The superscript tool

  • To use, highlight text and click on tool

The abbreviation tool

  • To use, highlight letter/s and type the full word in the Title field

Please note: Sussex style is to use E (type in Email) before email addresses and T (type in Telephone) before telephone numbers.

The align tools. The align tools allow you to position text and images on your page.

The bulleted list tool

  • Make sure each line of your list is separated a paragraph apart
  • Highlight list content and click on tool to create bulleted list

The numbered list tool

  • Make sure each line of your list is separated a paragraph apart

The accordion tool. This enables you to collapse sections of content, which allows the reader to see more of the page at a glance.

The rss tool. Displays an RSS feed.

  • Click on tool and paste in rss address

The image tool. You can add a single image or a whole gallery to your page with this tool.

The audio/video tool. Publish any video or audio files you have uploaded to the WCM. Please note: we recommend using the YouTube tool for video.

  • Click on tool and select from your wcm audio/video list

The YouTube tool. This is the recommended way to add video to your site.

  • To use, click on tool and paste in your YouTube url

The WCM File List tool. Publish any file you have uploaded to the WCM.

The WCM Folder List tool. Publish a whole folder of files from your WCM file list.

The Snippets list tool. A snippet is a chunk of page content that you want to display on several pages. Global snippets are created by the Web Team to be used across the Sussex website - e.g. Term dates. To create your own site snippets, see the WCM top toolbar.

  • To use a snippet, click on tool and choose from Global snippets or Site snippets.

The Person publications tool. Displays academic staff publications list on page.

  • To use, click on tool and paste in profile address.

The Insert predefined content tool. Choose from a selection of page elements - accordion, feature box, table etc.

  • To use, click on tool and select the page element you require.

The swatches tool.

This button becomes active when the cursor is within a compatible element - in this case a feature box or feature box header, or an accordion or dialog list header.

When you use this toolbar, the valid swatches for the element will be display and update the element according to your colour selection.

The block-level elements display tool.

This button toggle the guidelines that show block-level elements such as paragraphs, divs, nav, aside, and so on.
