Uploading a file
To upload a file select the ‘Upload a file’ link and you’ll be presented with a form. Click on the ‘browse’ button and select the file from your computer to upload. The file must already be on your computer’s drive, or a USB stick, CD/DVD or any media accessible via your computer. The form allows you to upload a variety of file formats, all of which are listed on the form itself as it may change from time to time. Currently, the valid types of files (ie, files with these extensions) are:
- doc, docx, dot, dotx
- xls, xlsx
- pps, pot, ppt, ppsx, potx, pptx
- pdf, rtf, txt
- zip, 7z, gz, tar, tgz
Once you have selected a file to upload you need to supply a title for the file. The title will be used as the link text. It is therefore important to make it relevant and appropriate, so people will know what the file contains. You can optionally add a description for the file as well. This will allow you to expound on what the document contains, its purpose, target audience, or things of that nature.
You can optionally select to have the file assigned to one or more folders by selecting the folders from the given list. The list will only show folders that have previously been created.
When you have completed the details you simply click on the ‘upload file’ button and wait until the page updates itself. Please be patient! If you are uploading a large document the system may take some time to upload and you shouldn’t interrupt the process once it’s started. Please wait for the page to update and give you feedback by either going to the file list or giving an error message.
Helpful hint
If you're uploading a document that changes every so often (a handbook, for example), think about how you name it before you upload it. For example, consider not naming it handbook_2009.doc because that instantly dates the file. Consider handbook.doc instead as it'll allow you to easily replace the file and not have to change any links later on.
